The process of making adult friends is bizarre to me. Or just making 'friends' in general. When I went to college, I swam = friends. Then I went to grad school = friends. When I moved to NYC I joined a triathlon club = friends.
When I started blogging in NYC, I kept it to myself. I started blogging in the middle of a pretty bad injury - physically and emotionally, and needed a place to vent and be honest. Then I wanted to a place to keep track of my running/triathlon progress. And again, I wanted a place to be honest. So I was scared of sharing the details with too many people.
But when I decided to move to DC, I started to look for DC blogs. About running and triathlon - just to get an idea of the community and options for training, but also in the back of my mind, I thought maybe I could make some friends. And I decided I couldn't be a blog-stalker anymore. I had to put myself out there.
And this weekend, after 4 years of blogging, I finally met someone via my blog! Very exciting (and also a constant source of amusement for my boyfriend).
Emily not only was agreeable to not meet until 11, but also to jumping in a car with a stranger and driving out to Georgetown to avoid weekend Mt. Vernon Trail riding. We had a great ride, the weather was perfect (only a few rain drops) and in a bizarre twist of fate, we ended up riding by my high school - too funny!! Then she FORCED me to get cupcakes :)
My plan is to basically follow her around and train where she trains...Emily, I hope you're OK with that :)

You should keep following Emily around because sometimes we swim together and that means that you will swim with me.
ReplyDeleteBecause meeting somebody for the first time in a swimsuit is normal.
Haha. I remember meeting my first blog friend. 11pm on a street corner in NYC. To drive up to lake placid. My sister thought I was nuts! Hope to meet you some day!

ReplyDeleteThat's been my plan for the past year. And yes, you live 10 feet away. We are now SBR internet friends. Not creepy at all. :)
ReplyDeleteObviously more than OK with said plan, as long as I can force you into more cupcake (or other food) stops. Next season will be a huge success in that regard, I can already tell :)
ReplyDeleteI think SSB has her timeline wrong because I'm pretty sure I came before that Placid trip.
ReplyDeleteAnd is it weird that I'm days away from publishing a post with the exact same subject matter? You are the DC to my BC ;)
blog friends turn IRL friends are fab! :)
ReplyDeletebut this true IRL friend misses the crap out of you!
